If you are getting tired of remakes, then this is just something that is gonna have to make you rethink that. Footloose (2011) is a fantastic remake of a classic movie from the 80s that is better known for it’s soundtrack than the movie itself. When it came out it was considered a musical, and is filed under musical, but there is no singing in it.

Ren McCormick comes to the small town where dancing and rock’n'roll music have been banned. He makes some friends and decides that it’s time to make a change and pull a town out of it’s funk after a tragic accident caused this laws to be made.

So, getting back to the fact that the original movie is better remembered for it’s soundtrack than itself, I guess I should say that this movie’s soundtrack isn’t that special. The soundtrack is pretty much the same iconic songs, just redone, with a little twist added to some, or new songs altogehter added. For sure, David Banner wasn’t in the Kevin Bacon version.
Doesn’t mean the soundtrack is bad, but it is unmemorable. However, the movie does feature the original “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins, and “Let’s Hear It For the Boy” by Deniece Williams.

The movie was entertaining though. If you’ve seen the original movie, then you can see everything coming and will see each scene before it happens, because this movie is a SHOT for SHOT remake. Some things have been changed, and maybe changed for the better, and some things were changed and just… changed. For one, the memorable tractor chicken scene, is now changed to a school bus racing scene that ends in explosions. Another thing, and this really won’t ruin the movie, but Ren comes to this small town by himself, where in the original he came with his mother. Ren comes to town because his mom died. The preacher isn’t as strict and terrfying as John Lithgow was in the original, not saying that Dennis Quaid did a bad job.

There are other obvious changes, but all in all, the movie is very good. The acting is a little off, but the dancing is pretty awesome. Kenny Wormald isn’t bad to look at, and he does an amazing job bringing a new spin on Ren, but his accent doesn’t fit right. Julianne Hough, and I am reading everywhere that people need to “keep an eye on her” because big things will come from her, I don’t see it. She was average in the movie, but does a great job dancing. She also brings a darker side to Ariel. Andy MacDowell does a great job as Ariel’s mother and the preacher’s wife. Ren’s friend Willard, played by Miles Teller was the comic relief of the movie, and I think does a good job representing Chris Penn’s character.

Overall, this movie was very fun. It really had me tapping my feet and wanting to get up and dance. You gotta cut loose and see this movie.

9 / 10

In a neighborhood that looks just like every other suburban area, the Brewster’s have a new neighbor. When Charley Brewster, played awesomely by Anton Yelchin, gets told by his friend Ed that his next door neighbor is a vampire who has been killing people, he receives the news skepticlly. But who can blame him? In today’s world our vampires are kind creatures who are simply looking for love. They sparkle in the light and want to be understood that their lives are awful from suffering for years and years. Charley ignores the news until he starts to see it for himself. It’s only a matter of time until vampire Jerry, played perfectly by Colin Farrell, figures out that someone is on to him.

I’m putting it out there right now, that I have never seen the original Fright Night, that came out in 1985. I’ve been told by many that it was very noteworthy and I really need to check it out, and I plan to. That being said though, this movie was pretty damn cool. Everything was modernized obviously, and there is even mention of Twilight in the movie, so our characters know off hand what vampires are portrayed as.

So what works for this movie is that it’s the right amount of suspense and comedy to keep you entertained. I didn’t find one dull moment in the movie. If you liked a movie like Disturbia, then you’ll definitely love this, because to me this was Disturbia with vampires. Scares don’t get me, unless they are cheap pop out scares, which there are a few, but not many. If anything the suspense got me. David Tennant did a great job as a Russell Brand-like Chris Angel-esque vampire expert who always was pouring himself a drink.

The soundtrack was also very mention worthy, but if I hear Foster the People’s Pumped Up Kicks one more time, I’ll scream. This movie also stars the incredibly talented Toni Collette, the beautiful Imogen Poots, and everyone’s favorite McLovin’ Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Surely check this movie out, hopefully it can beat out it’s competitors this weekend, unless you’re going to be a manly man and check out Conan the Barbarian instead. But I think you’ll get your money’s worth with Fright Night.

Wowzers. Bringing it back. Okay well not back that far seeing that I was one years old when the first one came out but I remember enjoying it when it was re-run on tv. Kim Kattrall actually looks hot. Less skanky then how you see her on ‘Sex in the City’. Exciting. The one lame thing about the remake is the plot the execs are trying to come up with. Instead of a mannequin the girl would be a hologram. Not too sure how that will workout. I’m thinking it should be shot in the future and the mannequins are being taken away and burned to be replaced with holograms. The man (Andrew McCarthy) would fall in love and save one of the mannequins he has the hots for. Okay so that probably wouldn’t work out but I think it would be better then some dude falling in love with a hologram…right?

Columbia’s new version of the 90′s classic Total Recall will be penned by Kurt Wimmer. I’m really curious who will be casted. So far Arnold flicks that have been recreated or part of a franchise haven’t done well. A great example would be the newest Terminator movie by McG. Oh and let’s not forget the shitastic Alien Vs. Predator movies. Can’t blame Arnold for the remakes, you can only blame him for being a crappy Governor. He was a bad ass actor back in the day. I think he should go back to doing what he was meant to do. “GET TO THE CHOPPPPPER!”
