Save an Application Icon on your Mac

Monday, May 25th, 2009

This tip is amazing. I just read how to do it and am so stoked. Have you ever wanted to save one of those beautiful icons you have on your dock? Maybe even save the hi-res version???

Well now you can. The icon above was taken straight out of my Applications folder. So this is how it’s done.

  1. First you have to go to your Applications folder and select the app or icon you want to become hi-res.
  2. Command + C to copy it
  3. Now simply open Preview
  4. In Preview click on the menu bar at the top and press FILE > NEW FROM CLIPBOARD
  5. TaDaaaaa. Now you have all the icon sizes in Preview
  6. Last you should just press FILE > SAVE, and re-save just the large icon so you can post it on your blog or whatever else you want to do with it.

Hope this helps. :)

Browsing a webpage with ease

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

A cool little tip to browsing a website using non standard techniques is using the Space Bar. Most use the scroll ball on their mouse, arrow keys, or even the trackpad if you have that option. Hitting the spacebar will jump the page down. A feature I just figured out to add on to this is holding Shift+Spacebar which will make the page jump upwards. Pretty bad ass and easy way to navigate.

Syncing your Blackberry to your Mac

Friday, May 15th, 2009

With my current job I tend to service a lot of people with Blackberry’s on their Mac’s. So many times I get the question of whether or not you can sync the phone with the computers address book and iCal (calender). The usual answer would be to use the free service from RIM called PocketMac. Wouldn’t you know it that all the new Blackberry’s won’t work with the current PocketMac? It’s apparent that the company doesn’t care about their mac users with the fact that they haven’t made a solid update to the software. There is a solution luckily and it will cost you. I can tell you that it works great and I’ve had tons of happy users because of it.

It’s called Missing Sync by Mark/Space. The program will cost you $40 dollars but I would say it is well worth it. If I owned a Blackberry it would be one of my first purchases. Fortunately I have an iPhone :)

So for all you Blackberry users you should get Missing Sync.

Mac OSX Shortcuts

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

I’ve compiled the most important shortcut commands which pertain to your Apple computer. Most of the shortcuts will be able to be used in multiple programs. Here they are…

Word Processing (these will work not only in a word processor):

command + x = Cut
command + c = Copy
command+ v = Paste
command + s = Save
command + p = Print
command + d = Duplicate
command + a = Select All
delete = Backspace (many get this confused coming from PC assuming to find a backspace)
fn + delete = Forward delete aka. oposite of backspace. This is not needed if you have a full keyboard.

Application/Window Management:

command + q = Quit Application
command + w = Close Window
command + h = Hide Application
command + tab = Tab through current applications open

Managing Large iPhoto Libraries With Keywords

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

If you’re like me and have an extremely large iPhoto library (I have over 23,000 photos) it can be intimidating to begin organizing your photos. In iPhoto 08 you can organize your photos within Events, but that’s the easy part. The tricky part is not only finding the photos your need, but finding them fast. Welcome to the wonderful world of keywords.

Let’s say for example that you’re looking for every photo with you in it. Not only that, you want photos of you and your friend. With keywords you’ll be able to find exactly those photos in seconds.

The trick to efficiently organizing your photos is to first think of every category you will need. For example, every person you want to tag, every place, etc. To do this, open iPhoto, click on Window, and click on Keywords. If you can’t click on the option, select an individual photo first. Once in there you’ll see a button labeled “Edit keywords.” Click on it and you’ll be able to add and remove keywords as you see fit:
